Mingomba Mining Limited has commissioned a new maternity annex at Kakoso Level One Hospital in Chililabombwe, expanding access to safer maternal and newborn care for mothers, babies, and families in the district.
The annex was handed over on 28 April 2026 and is part of Mingomba’s broader commitment to invest in communities around its operations, with health, education, and livelihoods among the company’s priority areas.

Kakoso Level One Hospital serves as a key public health facility for a district population of more than 150,000 people, with an immediate catchment area of over 17,000. Its Maternal and Child Health section provides essential services including antenatal care, postnatal care, family planning, under-five clinics, cervical cancer screening, and delivery services.
But rising demand has placed real pressure on the facility.

Before the new annex, the maternity unit had only two delivery beds, two pre-delivery beds, and two post-delivery beds, despite managing an average of 219 deliveries every month. Limited space and equipment also affected emergency newborn care, with only one neonatal resuscitator available at the facility.
The new annex changes what is possible.

For mothers, the annex means safer births closer to home. For newborns, it means stronger care in the first moments of life. For nurses, midwives, and doctors, it means better tools and space to continue serving the community with care and commitment. At Kakoso, the impact is immediate: more room for mothers, stronger newborn care, and better support for the doctors, nurses, and midwives who serve the community every day.
